Drinking Olive Oil for Dessert

Drinking Olive Oil for Dessert

Sometimes I recommend drinking a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil with a squeeze of lemon juice after dinner to help the liver detox the daily toxins that built up in the system.  The liver does the majority of its detox work at 11pm-1am.  With the olive oil in your body at that time it helps the liver move the toxins through the gallbladder duct to the large intestine to then be eliminated.

Combining olive oil with lemon helps maintain lubricant for digestive mucus so not only does it help in moving toxins but also helps rid the body of constipation.  The discomfort from the body being toxified can lead to discomfort, and there’s no better cure for that than taking a quick drink of olive oil after dinner. The body has subtle ways of signaling that it is in need of a detox. Signs of this include headaches, slower digestion, and dry mouth.

Olive oil is another great tool for taking care of the skin and hair. Taking a small drink of olive oil is known to help boost hair growth. The vitamin D and vitamin E contents found in olive oil can help moisturize dry skin. While helping improve the skin cosmetically, it can also help prevent skin cancer. The antioxidant properties of olive oil counter the oxidation of rays from the sun. Studies show that in the Mediterranean region where drinking olive oil is common, only three in every 100,000 residents there get skin cancer.

The idea of consuming olive oil this way comes from the Mediterranean diet, which, despite its share of naysayers, has been found to be effective. Olive oil has an acid called oleic acid, which gives the feeling of fullness and promotes the feeling of satiety.

According to various studies, drinking extra virgin olive oil may prevent the formation of free radicals in the body, and reduce the incidence of colon cancer. This is because olive oil is full of antioxidants.
So now you know! All you need to do, to make the most of this amazing night tonic, is to take the juice of a ripe lemon and add it to a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, and drink it up! The better the quality of olive oil, the more beneficial this "dessert" will be for you.

Health Benefits of

Diatomaceous Earth

Food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a white powder that is almost entirely made of silica.  Silica is a mineral that is already in our body and is an important component of our  ligaments, cartilage, and muscles. When taken as a supplement DE may help to absorb mercury, E. coli, parasites, viruses, pesticide, radiation, drug residues and other toxins.

The only cautionary side effect that we have found relating to food grade diatomaceous earth has to do with direct inhalation and is essentially the same caution that is advised when handling any fine powder. Diatomaceous Earth is a very fine powder.

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is 89% Silica.  It was established in the 1940s that life can’t exist without Silica. More recently, in her book “Water & Salt” Dr. Barbara Hendel states: “Silica is the most important trace element in human health.” Silica plays an important role in many bodily functions and has a direct relationship to mineral absorption.

Yet most people are, in fact, silica deficient.  We carry around 90mcgs of silica per 1 gram of hair we have on our bodies and we carry around 100mcgs of silica per 1 gram of bone.  Silica is in all of our connective tissue and it is so very important to include this mineral in our diets. Silica is mostly found in the fiber portions of whole grains, and the skins of fruits and vegetables.

Among other things, enough silica in the body is vital for calcium absorption to allow calcium supplements to work.

Reported Health Benefits of Silica / Diatomaceous Earth Include:

  1. Maintaining Healthy Blood Pressure Levels
  2. Maintaining Healthy Cholesterol Levels
  3. Better Calcium Utilization for help with Osteoporosis and Healthier Joints
  4. Stimulates Weight Loss
  5. Improvement in Hair, Nails, Teeth & Gums
  6. More Energy

According to Kayla T. Daniel, PhD, CCN and Galen D. Knight, PhD in their article “Mad as a Hatter” there is no better product to detox heavy metals and radiation from your body than with Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth!

Take diatomaceous earth daily on an empty stomach. I recommend starting small and slowly working your way up to a higher dose; begin with a teaspoon added to at least 12 ounces of liquid. Mix vigorously and drink immediately.  Some people don't like the mildly chalky flavor and gritty texture. If that describes you, try adding DE to a drink with more flavor (milk, orange juice, coffee, smoothies) or to light foods like yogurt, oatmeal, or applesauce.

As your body begins to detox, you may experience what is commonly known as "die off," which sometimes gives people mild flu-like symptoms for a couple days. This is a side effect of toxins leaving your body, not a side effect of DE itself. You can counteract these symptoms by increasing your fluid consumption, as well as reducing your DE dose for a couple days.

For gum health, because DE is one of the most nourishing substances for your gums, as your gums are connective tissue, which needs silica. To use it, mix 1 heaping tablespoon with water into a paste consistency. Pack it into your gums overnight after you brushed your teeth. Your gums will absorb the diatomaceous earth.

If you have other ideas on how to use DE please share!

No Stress Bone Broth Powder

Bone broth is a wonderful, medicinal drink to help heal the gut, immune system, skin, hair, and brain.  I have written on it's health benefits before and in my office have handouts with recipes.  Even though simmering a bone for hours sounds easy sometimes it's hard for my patients to comply.  It's only worth making if the bone is organic and sometimes that can be hard to find.  The broth is also a warm drink that can be hard to drink in the heat of the summer.  So I went looking for alternatives to making your own and found some online companies where you can buy it but it's on the expensive side.  Bare and Bones has a great one but with shipping it is $90 for 6 pounds of it.  In my research, a patient actually brought  to my attention, Epigenetic Labs that makes a bone broth powder.  How convenient!  I already do a morning shake for most of my breakfasts and instead of protein powder I would try the bone broth powder that is 20 grams of protein for a scoop.  I bought the original for $49 for about 25 scoops (chocolate and vanilla are sweetened with stevia which are great options for the original does have to be hidden in a smoothie).

Besides a great source of protein the bone broth helps heal the gut, grow healthier nails, skin and hair and is great brain food!  A wonderful way to start the day!  So you can add just water or milk to the powder or make a smoothie.  Here's the recipe I use for my morning smoothie with my Ninja blender:

1/2 an avocado with the pit
1 cup spinach
1 scoop bone broth powder
1 Tbsp. flax seeds
8 cocoa beans
1 Tbsp. maple syrup
1Tbsp. bee pollen
1/2 inch turmeric root
1/2 inch ginger root
1/2 inch sunchoke
1 Tbsp. spirulina
