Lavender Oil Benefits

Lavender is one of the most used essential oil in the world. Because it is so popular I was thinking of giving everyone a free sample of it at this week's workshop but I decided it's best to muscle test what each person needs so their sample can be as useful as possible. I wanted to give you a sneak preview of Thursday's workshop and I thought writing about lavender, which many of you have smelt in my office, would be good. It is so popular because it does an array of things. Lavender has been known to:

Reduces anxiety and emotional stress
Heals burns and wounds
Improves sleep
Restores skin complexion and reduces acne
Slows aging with powerful antioxidants
Improves eczema and psoriasis
Alleviates headaches

This is how I use it:

As a Natural Perfume-

Do you want to smell good without using toxic perfumes? Lavender oil is a great scent for women and for men too. You can either try adding pure oil directly to your skin, or you can dilute oil in water for a more subtle scent.

If you’d like to rub the oil right onto your skin, try adding 2-3 drops into your palms and then rubbing your hands together. Then add the oil directly onto on your skin, clothes, or hair. You can also try using 2 drops of lavender oil added to a spray bottle with about ½ cup of water. Shake up the spray bottle and then spray whatever you’d like. You may also want to consider combining lavender oil with other relaxing oils, like cedar wood essential oil or frankincense essential oil. Combining different oils means you have lots of versatility when it comes to different scent options, without needing to purchase many different bottled, expensive perfumes.

As a Non-toxic Air Freshener-

The same way you use lavender oil as a perfume, you can use it around your home as a natural, toxic-free air freshener. Either spray lavender oil around your home or try diffusing it. To create a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom before you fall asleep, try spraying the lavender oil and water mixture directly onto your bed sheets or pillow. You can try the same method in your bathroom as well, and also on your bath towels. Before taking a relaxing bath or shower, spray your towel with lavender oil so its relaxing scent is waiting for you when you step out of the shower.

As a Natural, Chemical-Free Lip Balm-

Lavender oil is excellent for preventing sun burns on the lips and also healing chapped, dried lips. Try adding a couple of drops of oil to shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil/coconut butter, or another “carrier oil” and then rubbing it into your lips for protection whenever you will be in the sun. If you are sun burned in other areas on your body, try using the same method to heal the skin more quickly and prevent itchiness and pealing that can result after a bad sun burn.

As a Remedy for Stomach Discomfort-

Many people find the scent of lavender to be soothing to the stomach. If you are feeling nauseous, or know that you are going to be traveling in a car of plane and are prone to motion sickness, spray some lavender oil on your skin and clothes or rub it into your temples, next, and palms.

As a Secret Flavor Booster in Healthy Recipes-

Lavender is a great flavor enhancer in things like grain-free muffins, teas, and even salad dressings. Lavender oil is completely edible, but you will want to use a very small amount since the taste is very powerful. Try adding 1-2 drops to your recipes for a surprising flavor booster. I use it with things like dark cocoa, pure honey, cranberries, balsamic vinaigrette, black pepper, and apples.

Good Eggs - Local, Organic Food to Your Doorstep!

At the suggestion of a patient I checked out Good Eggs and it is AMAAAAAAAAZING! I highly believe in buying organic and local but I don't always have the time to go to the Farmer's Market so Rob Spiro, the genius that he is, put it online. Imagine Fresh Direct but straight from the farm. They have been in Brooklyn, San Francisco and parts of Los Angeles and New Orleans. And just last month they officially opened up Manhattan delivering in a handful of downtown neighborhoods. They're now delivering to Soho, West Village, Gramercy, Union Square, Flatiron, parts of Tribeca and Chelsea. This area covers: 10003, 10010, 10011, 10012, 10013 and 10014 (ZIP codes). They have plans to expand to more of Manhattan in the coming months.
Combined, the company uses more than 1,000 local farmers and food-makers.

On the website, shoppers can sort by preferences such as items that are locally grown, vegetarian, vegan, organic, wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, heritage breed, kosher, or even made with pastured eggs. Delivery is available seven days a week and is free on orders over $75. Unfortunately this is not an immediate gratification site. Deliveries must be scheduled at least two days in advance. I find the prices reasonable considering you are getting it local, organic food delivered at the click of a button!

Be Connected with an Open Crown Chakra

The crown chakra is the seventh chakra and it is at the top of the "chakra ladder" which starts from the root chakra that grounds us on the Earth and progresses upward to the crown chakra which connects us with the universe and the Divine source of creation.

The gift of this chakra is experiencing unity and the selfless realization that everything is connected at a fundamental level. The energy of this chakra allows us to experience mystical oneness with everyone and everything in nature.

There is no intellectual knowing at the level of seventh chakra, but there is serenity, joy, and deep peace about life. You have a sense of knowing that there is a deeper meaning of life and that there is an order that underlies all of existence. The "way of the crown chakra" is the way of going beyond the limits of your own ego. It is the way of transcending the ego and knowing that all of creation is interconnected at a fundamental level. According to Tantric philosophy, the seventh chakra is both a receiver and giver of energy and consciousness. It receives energy to sustain life and it gives back the personal energy to unite with the collective pool of consciousness.

It is the meeting point between finite (the body and the ego) and infinite (the universe and soul). The thousand petal chakra embraces an attitude of gratitude for one's life. When we realize that everything is interconnected and that we are part of the larger scheme of life, we begin to live with gratitude, faith and trust, rather than filled with fear and anxiety.

The challenge of this chakra is to liberate the spirit - open to the divine - and at the same time stay firmly rooted deep in the ground. If the crown chakra is blocked on can feel constant frustration, migraines, depression, no spark of joy, destructive feelings. It is white or purple, in color and the stones associated with it are clear quartz, amethyst, and Oregon opal. Wearing purple glasses can help too!

The chakracise is to meditate for 12 minutes. Could be longer too but at least 12 minutes is necessary to stimulate the opening of the crown chakra. In meditating you are clearing your mind to make the crown chakra stronger. A stronger connection will allow you to feel more intuitive communication with you and your higher Self. If you are interested in purchasing the crown chakra purple glasses just email me and let me know at! $30 plus shipping.
